Lent 2019: Reading the Gospels Together

Lent 2019: Reading the Gospels Together

During Lent, we are encouraged to spend intentional time with God.  In the past, we invited people to come together to spend time in meditation and prayer.  This year we are going to break from our tradition.  Rather than in quiet contemplation time, we are going to read the Bible together.

This year during Lent we will read through all four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.  The goal is to spend time in the word.  We’re not studying it.  We’re not meditating on it.  We are reading it on a macro level.  More often we take little bits of the Bible, here and there, and study it in detail.  However, by reading through the gospels in larger quantity, we will get a better sense of the whole book.  This kind of reading will give us a bird’s eye view allowing us to see things we don’t normally notice when reading in smaller segments.

Each day we will meet in the sanctuary, open in prayer and then have two volunteers read the assigned passages.  After the Bible is read, people are invited to stay longer for quiet reflection and prayer time.  There will be a sign-up sheet for readers in the Great Hall.  You may sign-up for more than one time.

The reading schedule is included so that those who are unable to join us or miss a day, can catch up.  We will begin meeting on Ash Wednesday (March 6, 2019) at noon and finish on Maundy Thursday (April 18, 2019).  We will meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  We hope you’ll accept this invitation to come and spend time in the Word.
